Repose for MAC

Free, open-source menu bar break reminder that dims your screen to rest your eyes and pauses on its own while your camera or microphone is in use.

Repose Overview

Repose is a free, open-source break reminder that lives in the Mac menu bar. It counts down your work interval next to the clock, and when the time is up it dims your screen with a gentle reminder to look away and rest your eyes. When the break is over, the cycle starts again. Pause, resume, restart and every setting are in the menu itself, so there is no separate preferences window.

What sets Repose apart is that it stays out of your meetings. Instead of reading your calendar or looking for particular apps, it checks the hardware: if your camera or microphone is in use, it assumes you are on a call and waits until you are done. That works with Zoom, Meet, FaceTime, Teams, Slack huddles and any other call app without setup. It also pauses when there has been no keyboard or mouse activity for 5 minutes and starts a fresh work cycle when you come back, while video playback that keeps the display awake does not stop the timer. Repose is made by Fikri Karim and released under the MIT license. Version 1.1.1 adds a 90-minute work interval and a 10-minute break. It needs macOS 13 or later and updates itself through Sparkle.

Repose FAQ

Is Repose free?

Yes. Repose is free and open source under the MIT license.

What does Repose do?

It counts down your work interval in the menu bar and dims your screen when it is time for a short break to rest your eyes. After the break, the cycle starts again.

How does Repose know I am in a meeting?

It checks whether your camera or microphone is in use, using macOS CoreMediaIO and CoreAudio. If one is active, it assumes you are on a call and pauses the timer until you are done. No calendar access is needed.

Which call apps does Repose work with?

Because it checks the camera and microphone rather than specific apps, it works with Zoom, Google Meet, FaceTime, Microsoft Teams, Slack huddles and other call apps without any setup.

What happens when I step away from my Mac?

If there is no keyboard or mouse activity for 5 minutes, Repose pauses the timer. When you come back, it starts a full new work cycle, since you already had a break.

Does the timer stop while I watch a video?

No. Repose keeps the timer running during video playback that keeps the display awake, so you still get break reminders.

How long are the work intervals and breaks?

You choose them in the menu. Version 1.1.1 added a 90-minute work interval and a 10-minute break to the available options.

Which macOS version does Repose need?

Repose needs macOS 13 or later.

How do I install and update Repose?

Download the DMG, open it and drag Repose to Applications. Updates are then handled automatically through Sparkle.
